Tough Times

Everyone, I've just been laid off my job... my wife and I decided to cut off services that are not necessary for our daily lives, it's hard for me but I will have to disconnect our internet service next month. I enjoyed maintaining the site and I do hope you guys had a nice time here also. Hopefully I can restore the site back up when I get a new job, I'll be selling the computers that I use for now, I'll keep the hard drives with the site and the galleria. All I'll have left is my one laptop

I should say we had a good time didn't we? For those who donated before I thank you all, and if anyone here wants to take over maintaining the site, if you have a server to host it please let me know. I've been looking at possible free web hosts just for the forum but I couldn't find one that allows adult posts. And also with those kind of hosting, one report from the site owners and they'll close it.

Right now my main concern is my wife and our baby, I do hope I find a job quickly, but with this economy... it just sucks.

Ubuntu 9.04: Installing Lighttpd 1.5 from source with PHP + mod_cache

This is the patched version of lighttpd with mod_cache, extract this to a folder

tar zxvf lighttpd-1.5.#######.gz

We need to install some required libraries first

type ./configure --help to see configuration options

This is what I used

after installing you should be able to type

lighttpd -V

and see some nice output from lighttpd

you can also type spawn-fcgi to make sure that installed as well

copy the sample config file

mkdir /etc/lighttpd
cp doc/lighttpd.conf /etc/lighttpd/

log folder

mkdir /var/log/lighttpd

we need to create a startup file in the /etc/init.d folder
Go here to download the startup script http://redmine.lighttpd.net/projects/lighttpd/wiki/ScriptsUbuntu
create a file called lighttpd in the /etc/init.d/ folder and then

chmod a+x /etc/init.d/lighttpd

Create a user to run lighttpd: if you have installed lighttpd 1.4 from apt or apache you can just use the www-data user again

adduser -m -d /var/www -s /sbin/nologin lighttpd

Modify the lighttpd file from /etc/init.d/ to match the user you want to run it as

chown www-data:www-data /var/log/lighttpd

then type

update-rc.d lighttpd defaults

Edit the lighttpd.conf file to enable php fastcgi

Make sure following modules are loaded:

Make sure /var/cache/lighttpd is writeable by lighttpd and it exists.

Configure fastcgi PGP module by appending following configuration directives:

Make sure to leave the # in front of proxy-core.check-local = "enable" otherwise lighttpd won't start, don't know why.

Also don't forget to add proxy-core.worked-with-modcache = "enable" otherwise mod_cache won't do anything.

Save the config file and start lighttpd

sudo /etc/init.d/lighttpd start

If everything goes well you should see something like this
* Starting lighttpd [ OK ]
* Starting spawn-fcgi spawn-fcgi.c.206: child spawned successfully: PID: 15245
[ OK ]

inside the /var/www folder create index.php file and add something to it

test by browsing http://localhost/index.php
You should see php configuration options here

How to uninstall
go back to the lighttpd source

sudo make uninstall

Traffic Shaping with Lighttpd + PHP

Here's how I manage traffic on my web site that's served over a basic cable connection. The site has a forum and an area for register members to download stuff from. Having a very limited upload capacity I have to make sure members don't suck everything and make the forum unresponsive.

So here's how my lighttpd.conf file is setup:

# this limits the amount of connection a user can make to the server
evasive.max-conns-per-ip = 10

# then on my site configuration I use a combination of connection.kbytes-per-secon and evasive.max-conns-per-ip to throttle user connections to the download script

PulseAudio : Hate and Hate (pathetic audio)

Why the fuck does ubuntu need pulseaudio, everything seemed to work so well "WITHOUT" it!!! After removing the damn thing it seems xbmc worked much better on my system, before I had to kill it before launching xbmc. Had some troubles with boxee too, but after removing PA it works much better now.

All I can say is PulseAudio = Pathetic Audio

No one wants you PulseAudio so scram!!!

Dyndns not forwarding

This is odd is seems dyndns has stopped forwarding sitegeisha.dyndns.dk to my server, however I tried using SSH using sitegeisha.dyndns.dk and it work, also tried ftp and it worked, tried accessing using other ports and it also worked.

I also checked to see if port 80 was accessible from the outside and it was okay. http://www.canyouseeme.org/

WTF is going on???!!!

Youtube Cache with Squid + Lighttpd on Ubuntu

Make sure you got all the requirements.

1. Squid >= 2.6
2. Python >= 2.4
3. Python-urlgrabber (urlgrabber module of python)
4. Python-iniparse (iniparse module of python)
5. Lighttpd Web Server

For the iniparse there is nothing on the repositories you can download it here: http://code.google.com/p/iniparse/

After downloading extract it, on the terminal type:

sudo python setup.py install

Extract the youtube_cache-1.2.tar.gz archive if you haven't done so already.

Open the setup.py file from youtube cache and make this changes to the following entries

squid_user = 'proxy'
squid_group = 'proxy'

Create a dummy folder apache just don't want to get any errors with the install
apache_conf_dir = '/etc/apache2/conf.d/'

save it and type:

sudo python setup.py install

edit your squid conf file

sudo gedit /etc/squid/squid.conf

Paste the following at the end of the file:

make sure you can access this folder from http://localhost/video_cache
otherwise the cached flv files won't get served.

restart your squid and apache

sudo /etc/init.d/squid restart
sudo /etc/init.d/lighttpd restart

Configure the browsers to use your proxy and you can check if its working by typing

sudo tail -f /var/log/squid/youtube_cache.log

If it is working correctly after watching a video and trying to watch it again you should see something like this on the log file.

DOWNLOAD YOUTUBE 10167389 Video was downloaded and cached.
CACHE_SERVE YOUTUBE Video was served from cache.

Hope you get it to work too, those damn kids and their videos bahhh!!!

Lighttpd - light and fast web server

I've used IIS, then Apache on windows, then switched to LAMP and now I'm on LLMP and couldn't be much happier! Lighttpd lives up to its name, it is fast and easy on server resources. Learning it wasn't so bad, I actually found plenty of resources on the web and the configuration is actually much simpler than apache, also I didn't have to rely on webmin to configure it now.

Here's how I configured Lighttpd to run on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex with xcache, memcache and mysql.

I do apologize for this inconvenience I hope to get SG back up and running soon. Just remembered the original url got blocked when I started using OpenDNS service and now the new one is blocked again.

UFS Explorer just saved me, I was able to make an image of the failed drive, on my other pc with windows xp, I installed UFS Explorer. Then opened the image file that was shared on ubuntu over the network.

UFS Explorer scanned for the superblock and displayed all the folders I needed with the filenames intact and everything on that drive.I was then able to right click on each of them and copy it to a spare drive on the windows pc. It was so easy I now regret wasting so much time on those command line tools where you have to read several man pages just to get started.

Went home for lunch and just as I was about to microwave my MRE the power went kapootz :(

Site is down until power is restored, sorry guys, its back to my grill for me.

Well I'm back home, the servers are okay, me and my family made it through just fine. No damage to our place whatsoever. It took about a week for power to get back, we had running water which was good, but the heat made it almost impossible for people to sleep.

Electricity came back last night, we were all jumping for joy, finally I can get a hot shower! After that I began setting up the servers again, unluckily I guess our cable got knocked off or something, we got no TV and no Internet.

Already called Comcast, I don't know how long it will take for them to get our services back up and running again.

So Google Chrome is out! It is no doubt fast, hopefully it will be compatible with Firefox plugins soon. Can't wait to run adblock on it and web developer extension. So far only the Windows version is available, hopefully they will release one for Ubuntu, but until I get adblock its probably just gonna sit on my desktop gathering digital dust.

No-ip.com says I violated their Terms of Service, but they did not say what or which part of their service, nor did I get a warning after using their service for so many years!!!

WTF, I signed up for a different account but they won't let me use sitegeisha.no-ip.org anymore!

Download and configure adblock for use with squidguard

Restart Squid and then configure your browsers to use the ip address of the server running squid, mine was http://192.168.219.111:3128, fire up your browser and surf ad riddled sites to test it.

Sign-up for OpenDNS, not only do they provide you with speedy DNS queries they also feature ad blocking. The good thing about OpenDNS is that you only have to configure your router and it enables all the features on every computer on your network.

I knew I had flash properly configured on my LinuxMint pc but it required something else!!! Microsoft Silverlight!

It seems my motherboard is dead, after 6 years of service it finally gave up, I tested the PSU on another PC and it worked, I tried a working psu on the server and nothing, not even a single bleep. However when I plug in the network cable the ethernet card was lit up. But that could just be the card drawing power from the cable. Anyways without a pc to hookup the sg server to it will be down for some time :( sorry guys.

Ubuntu Kiosk + Opera = FTW!

Recently I've been tasked by the company that I work with to create kiosk terminals. We had some old Dell's lying around, they have a 400mhz processor, 128mb ram, 10gb hard drive. They would basically just show the company website but prevent them from going anywhere else.

Now I thought this would be a good chance to show them Ubuntu and Firefox, I'm an evangelist for those two. However what happens next is a trip into the twilight zone, I ended up having to use Opera.

It seems there are no good firefox extension that turns it into a kiosk, I tried searching on its add-on database. While there are some, most of them only works in Windoze!!! WTF!!! Mozilla wtf!!!! Open Source, ever heard of it???

Damn I was so pissed off, add the fact that the wireless usb adapters are a pain to configure in Ubuntu. I started to think that maybe I'm going on the wrong path. After googling for a miracle I finally found one post in a forum suggesting why not try opera... I've used opera before, in fact before Firefox I was a huge opera fan.

Sure enough, damn it was so easy with Opera, opera -kioskmode -nomenu -nosysmenu etc.

Check that link for the full list of options, everything worked so sweet in opera and it was fast too. I finished all the kiosk stations in a day, and wasted 2-3 days trying to get firefox to work.

To sum it up, I installed Ubuntu using the server iso. Create a kiosk user with limited system access. Then installed xorg, xscreensaver, opera, msttcorefonts. Got the wireless adapters working using wpa_supplicant and ndiswrapper.

I created a script to start X and then when opera closes it will logout the user, this script is then called from .bashrc

Removed the other terminals and left 2 running, didn't have any graphical login manager, and didn't need any window manager. They run fast and sweet on those old Dell suckers, I bet they are thankful that I saved them from the junkyard.

As for firefox, I'm so disappointed... really I am!

I'll describe a few steps I made to construct my personal repository. My current setup is:

- Ubuntu 'Warty' installed with Internet access (at work)
- Ubuntu 'Warty' installed without Internet access (at home)

Using the usual Ubuntu repositories, I updated the system and installed some packages I wanted (ruby, apache, mysql, etc). You don't need to install that on the host system, just use the apt-get's download only option. All files downloaded from repositories are in the /var/cache/apt/archives directory in the host system. I did these steps:

1. Created /opt/repo directory (could be the home directory)
2. Created the directory /opt/repo/binary (copied from Debian specs)
3. Copied all debs from my update from /var/cache/apt/archives to /opt/repo/binary
4. Executed dpkg-scanpackages like this:
# pwd
/opt/repo
# dpkg-scanpackages binary /dev/null | gzip -9c > binary/Packages.gz
5. Burned a CD with its contents

For use that in my standalone host, I did this:
# apt-cdrom add
...

Microsoft Predicted to Back Away from Vista - GigaOM

Just recently bought a tablet pc and I just want to slam it on the wall and rip it into pieces, the cause of my woes... Vista! It's slow as fuck... copying a single 700mb took forever, my media server (500mhz pentium II running ubuntu beat it!) It also drained the battery by doing system restore every couple of fucking minute! Had to turn it off as it was trashing the hard drive.

HP's wireless assistant is also crap, in fact HP installed so much crap on it, its annoying. My wife hated it, each time she'd restart or resume from sleep the damn thing can't find the wireless!!! The tablet I'm talking about by the way is the HP Pavilion TX1410US.

This thing also runs hot, I should have probably sticked with my instinct and bought a Core2Duo laptop. Used to liked Creative, but I guess now I would be staying away from them and actually I would refrain from ever recommending their products ever again, to anyone!!! Update on GD vs ImageMagick

I decided it wasn't fair for me to compare gd and imagemagick when I was calling imagemagick through exec( "convert image.jpg -thumbnail 100x TN_image.jpg" ) so I decided to install the extension for php called imagick.

This had to be installed to PECL, it didn't work on my ubuntu 7.10 by just doing apt-get install php5-imagick.

Nice examples of how to use imagick on Mikko's blog. I couldn't follow his examples though as the version that was installed through PECL didn't have some of the functions he used. Would have been nice to put shadows on my thumbnails though.

Anyways I made the script that creates thumbnails through imagick and compared it to the script in my gallery that uses GD. It seems GD was ahead by just a bit this time, although the quality of the imagick thumbnails were far superior, probably because I had set the GD functions to use less resolution.

GD TEST

From this example the images were really huge (3000x4500 pixels 1.5-2mb), the thumbnails rendered by GD seems pixelated compared to what imagick produced.

IMAGICK TEST

Imagick created 12 thumbnails with very nice quality but was 2 seconds slower than GD.

Well I've seen some code in php.net about creating thumbnails fast, basically some guy wrote an alternative to imagecopyresampled and called it fastimagecopyresampled. I decided to see how fast it really is, so to compare I created a script that would create thumbnails from a bunch of images using ImageMagick.

And here are the results:

Now using GD to generate the same thumbnails, I deleted the old ones.

It is clear who the winner is, definitely GD.

Moving the forum and galleria

Last night I "moved" the forum and the galleria to another server, well I didn't exactly move it, I just basically transferred all the database to the new server and mapped the drives from the old server to the new one. I'll have to physically move the drive later tonight.

What's amazing is that it worked out great! Far better than I expected, I really am impressed with Ubuntu(Linux) I'm never ever going back to using windows as a server ever again. Now if I could only transfer all the movies on my other ubuntu pc to this one, that would bring the pc running at home down to two.

So the site would be down again tonight but only for a little bit, and I expect no problem in moving the hard drives to the new server.

I'm currently making backups of the database and migrating all the galleries to a new computer. Hopefully everything will turn out okay. Hmmm... let's seem I'm at 20 wpm now using dvorak keyboard layout, it seems to have a lot of promise with regards to speed, but my main concern is that I seem to be forgetting QWERTY the more I use dvorak.

After the backups I need to restore them to the new server, and then pray that SMF and all my other settings work on the new one.

I just find it funny that Linux and its many variants are focusing so much on bling rather than actually much needed user function. I've used Ubuntu and Redhat for our servers at work, I even use it for my webserver at home. But one thing that really annoys me is the lack of webcam support and the fact that almost 90% of the time all this bling doesn't even work!

Vista at least performed well on my ATI All-in-wonder 9600 but Ubuntu fucking crapped out!!!! They say its the driver blame it on ATI blah blah, interestingly I tried Sabayon and on the fucking livecd it actually had the uber spinning desktop cube, but after I installed and it, the damn thing said something about direct rendering etc. fuck fuck fuck!!! What the fuck is wrong with this fuck, I spent like my entire evening trying to get this fuck working and nothing!

Linux ready for desktop, yeah probably by the time we send a guy to saturn or something.

This is Site Geisha's new home, since my ISP can't be relied on to provide 24x7 service, the gallery and the forum is always down, with it my blog. I've lost so much entries since I tried to maintain my own blog, hopefully using blogger would be a lot better.

Also since I will be shuffling the servers the main gallery and forum will be down, I also plan to move away from phpbb2 and use Simplemachines instead (http://www.simplemachines.org/).

At the cost of losing all member registrations and all the post... I wonder if its worth it, I haven't seen much spam lately. The counter-measure I've installed to rid phpbb of spam registrations seems to work quite well.

Quad Core Project

Finally got the parts for my quad core pc project, the case looks nice and installation on it was very easy.

Had a problem with the motherboard and the power supply not having enough of those molex thingies.

Gonna post some pics and screenshots on the site, however without further tweaking and just a basic install of windows xp pro sp2, Intel's Quad Core rocks! Coming from a 2.8 ghz Pentium 4 this is so awesome, played Half-life 2 without any glitch or skips.

Been using it for 3 days now, this baby is fast like lightning compared to my old pc Pretty stable to, only time it crashed was when I tried Playstation emulation and I guess the CDR plugin crashed the system.

Amazingly, after so many years I can now emulate the sony playstation at full speed!!! lol I almost cried when I played Tekken 3 and the whole video was playing like it was in fast forward.

The temps on my cpu according to abit's uguru program is about 40 degree celsius on idle, goes up to 50 i guess on full load.

Speedup PHP

So I was reading this article in slashdot and was playing with the server. I pretty much have done everything they have on that article except for using eaccelerator or apc.

So I decided to give eaccelerator a try, it seems to be easy to install and found a lot of stuff online about it. It wasn't on the default ubuntu repositories so I had to manually install it.

That one is the one I followed to install it on my ubuntu dapper box. http://2bits.com/articles/installing-eaccelerator-0-9-5-1-on-ubuntu-feisty-7-04.html (to get phpize install php-dev from the deb sources)

Seems to work great and I am loving it! Hope you guys see a difference on the server performance now. I observed that galleries when cached load up in about 0.01-0.14 seconds.

I never liked divx movies before cause of their proprietary format but it seems they are making some nice features and improvements on divx quality. The videos from the stage6 website are clear and they load real fast. Also I'm finding a lot of Ayu's videos in there and also new artist I haven't seen or heard before. They also let you download the videos for free!

I do tech support for friends and as a side job, I was helping a friend last night with her new PC that Windows Vista Home Premium, connect to the internet.

Now I consider myself to be tech savvy enough to configure just about anything on a computer. But wow was I in for a big surprise, vista changed so much from windows xp and even from the beta versions I tested that I just gave up, we could get her computer to connect to the internet through her DSL connection.

The funny thing is, I know that the internet connection is working because her msn messenger works. IE7 nor Firefox would not connect to the internet, when I tried to use vista's diagnostics to check for problems it says none found, when I tried to add a new connection it says that I'm already connected to the internet. But when I try to visit any website it says I'm not connected, the thing that bugs me is yahoo messenger and msn messenger works!!!

Fuck vista the effects looks nifty but they really fucked bad with interface on this one. I guess they were attempting to make the OS easier for new users, but for someone who has used windows half of his life this thing didn't look easy to me.

FUCK YOU VISTA!!!!!

Linux or Mac for me next time I upgrade, and personally I'm going to recommend those two to all my customers now.

Fixed the error messages on the website so now non-members can easily find out how to join SG. I tried to join a Filipino torrent tracker site and after reading several rules pages and readmes and getting my tracker account and forum account it turns out that I have to either submit an original content or give the admin $5 to use their tracker. Forget it!

So then I checked back at SG and realized that the error messages for new members were confusing and also non of them worked since the site was moved. Well now users get a much nicer page when they try to visit the galleria without all the necessary requirements.

The Asian Model Directory is almost done, I hate the way the AsiaNude4U CSV is setup. So I guess what we have for AN4U will do for now, the 88Square and A4U galleries are okay.

Searching for model names also work, I still need to make another search that can do search for tattoos, skin color, breast size etc. I hope you guys like the AMD, its an improvement from the previous A4U directory if you ask me.

Argh working on the Asian Model Directory is giving me a headache, basically different series made different directory hierarchy and I have to allow the script to adapt to different levels of folders.

I thought I got it right already I already uploaded 88Square 1-19, then on CD20 the script breaks cause of the Halloween set.

Cache_lite rocks! Without it my bandwidth was taking tremendous hit and now it takes a page in the cache 0.13 - 0.3 seconds to load. Had to reconfigure much of the existing pages as I was using it incorrectly

The whole site is looking much better now, more organized than before. Still got lots of plan for more features, one of them a model directory that identifies each model from different series. I know a lot of people miss the A4U Database. Hopefully I'll get it done tomorrow.

I spent so much time last night trying to store thumbnails into mysql. I've always wanted to know if it was faster. So finally I did store it, but guess what, using the filesystem as thumbnail storage was faster. I was getting 2-3 secs total execution time when visiting a new gallery with no thumbnails yet when stored to mysql. While on the reiserfs it was like 1-2 secs, then after the thumbnails are generated it takes less than 0.20 secs to render a page but with mysql its like 0.35 or something then it just keeps getting higher the more thumbnail you have on the page.

Well the server had a hiccup. . . actually I kicked the powerstrip and the whole thing just went down. This is a temporary server, I will move the site again to another server that has more disk space. Scary though on windows when the power shuts down mysql never had a problem recovering, on this server the tables got corrupted.

I found this old image on one of my CD's, this was back in college when I was running SG on an old pentium III. I had an 18 gb of HD space back then, now I have more than a terrabyte of HD space.

One major benefit of moving the site to ubuntu is now I can easily add directories thats outside of the main galleria simply by creating shortcuts, this would never have worked in windows. Or at least I couldn't find a way to make it work.

Fixed the quota reset, it not resets every midnight, forgot that I have to migrate the Asian4You database also which I created using Firebird . . . which was neat but slow as hell. Just have to recode the database I guess. The site is somewhat usable now, with the same functions as before, forum is up but we lost some data.

Arghhghhghgh I can't figure out how to reset the quota back Damn php5 not compiled with mysql support wtf!!!

So what's going on why is Site Geisha down you ask? Well currently migrating the entire site to my Ubuntu server.

The move went smoothly in fact I've also rewritten the galleria code and optimized the download code. I tested PHPBB3 Beta 5, but sadly the authentication script I use no longer works with it. So I guess we're stuck with PHPBB2 for awhile until PHPBB3 gets out of beta or until I can reconfigure the script.

Apache2 works so much better than IIS, with mod_deflate enabled I can conserve my bandwidth too. Also to save disk space full thumbnail previews are no longer available, only the first row of pics get a thumbnail.

Any suggestions/comments don't hesistate to email me, your admin ^_^ who's working solo to get SG back for all of you.
